Donation From SGI Funds Benches at Monterey Pass Battlefield Park
Just in time for peak season at Monterey Pass Battlefield Park, six new benches have been placed along the battlefield’s walking trail so visitors can take periodic breaks from discovering the Civil War battle that took place July 4 and 5, 1863, during the retreat from Gettysburg.
The benches were purchased by the Friends of the Monterey Pass Battlefield with funds donated by Specialty Granules LLC.
SGI’s Charmian stone quarry, located near the Monterey Pass Battlefield Park and Museum, produces roofing granules for shingles; aggregates for construction; and fines repurposed for soil fortification in farming.
“For close to 100 years, SGI’s Charmian plant has mined rock and provided area residents with consistent employment they can rely on,” said Plant Manager Justin Bushneck of Waynesboro. “One of our priorities is to be a good neighbor to the communities that surround us and to support the important work of local organizations like the Friends of the Monterey Pass Battlefield.”
Lee Royer, chairman, for the Friends of the Monterey Pass Battlefield said SGI has supported efforts at the park and Visitor’s Center since its inception.
“SGI has worked with us from the very beginning with shingles on the roof of our Visitor’s Center and various other donations to enhance our battlefield area. We want to thank SGI for the donation of the benches. We appreciate this donation and their continued support,” said Royer.
