A new U.S. Patent was awarded to SGI over the summer to protect its intellectual property related to SGI roofing products.

  • U.S. Patent 11,999,655, “Building Materials Comprising Carbon Dioxide-Treated Agglomerated Particles,” was issued June 4 with SGI Manager, Research and Development Peter Wilson, PhD, named inventor.

The new patent covers the method used to treat silicate-bound agglomerates of SGI’s pulverized rock fines with carbon dioxide gas to insolubilize the agglomerated particles to meet the performance demands of applications such as roofing.

“A patent like this one demonstrates our ongoing growth as a company and also helps ensure the innovations SGI team members work hard to develop are protected,” said SGI President Justin P. Dunlap. “I’m proud of employees like Peter who continue to advance our methods and technologies.”

It is the first U.S. Patent awarded to Wilson and the third awarded to SGI in 2024.

Headquartered in Hagerstown, Maryland, SGI is a leading mining and mineral processing company specializing in the development of roofing products, building materials, and soil amendments for agriculture. SGI sites are strategically located nationwide in Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania; Waynesboro, Pennsylvania; Annapolis, Missouri; Pembine, Wisconsin; Ione, California; and Trona, California.
